Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
What Is EFT?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique and is a state of the art application based on the findings of Einstein that everything is energy, including our bodies and the well established methods used in Chinese Medicine. Tapping away issues using specific meridian points is a universal healing aid that can be thought of as a unique emotional or psychological version of acupuncture except that finger tips are used on the points instead of needles.
Because we are energy, when we have something occur in our lives that traumatizes us, we will experience a disruption in our energy system from the experience. Being traumatized may happen by the simple act of never being picked by your peers in grammar school to be on their team. It may not appear to be traumatic now, but at the time it had an impact. Perhaps convincing the child that they were not liked, a bad player, unpopular, etc. Because the disruption is in our system, it is remembered long after the initial event and can be activated by a situation that is similar to the original event. Not necessarily the particulars that occurred, but the residuals that came with the event.
An example would be having to give a verbal book report in grade school and having trouble getting the words out and perhaps the class laughed and made fun of the your efforts. This would cause some to feel belittled and perhaps ashamed and these feelings could manifest into a belief of not being good enough, feeling stupid, afraid to speak in front of groups, etc. The belief that becomes our truth, and will make up part of who we believe we are as a result of such an occurrence, will be different for everyone. At times like that we come to a conclusion about ourselves based on our background, upbringing, feelings about ourselves, etc.
EFT is a form of analysis. The difference between EFT and traditional talk therapy is that with EFT the disruption that was caused by the initial trauma can be removed, offering the opportunity to see the incident from a different perspective. The charge that was there, or the button that was pushed, is gone. The incident is now a distant memory with no power remaining.
If using the example from above about talking in front of the classroom, the sense of being a failure, or embarrassing easily that may have been a residual effect would be removed. It would then be possible to see the original incident from a different perspective. Many simple occurrences from childhood can cause major disruptions, that then create a belief about who we are. We then carry them with us through our lives.
EFT uses words that have a relevance to you and your situation to tune into an emotional or physical issue. While tapping you identify the issue that has caused the disruption to your energy system. The method is simple to learn and easy to apply. It can be used for many different disruptions from the fear of flying to the inability to swallow with ease because of an emotional issue. Once given the simple but invaluable tool you will be able to contribute to your own healing by having the ability to address issues on your own.
